Light, space, materiality
Sandra Tinari is an artist known for her work in painting and photography, creating colour fields that explore the subtleties of light, tone and materiality in our landscapes.
Her painting practice is grounded in a slow, meditative process, where over weeks and through multiple layers—often ten or more—cycles of repetition, addition and reduction give rise to soft tonal shifts and atmospheric depth that hold light.
Drawing from desert plains and the evolving mineral landscapes of salt lakes and tidal zones, her work distils these environments into quiet, spatial fields. Through subtle shifts in colour and light, she explores changing environmental conditions of heat, evaporation and drought, with an emphasis on surface, material presence and the meditative act of making.
Developed through work across the UK, Europe and the Middle East, Tinari’s practice reflects an ongoing engagement with light, material and the surrounding environment.
While living in Italy, in Carrara and the nearby artistic town of Pietrasanta, she established a lasting connection to materiality and form through exposure to the region’s marble landscapes. Later, the atmospheric golden light of southern Portugal, where she lived and surfed, further informed her sensitivity to colour, tone and spatial perception.
Her practice expanded into large-scale installation, public art and exhibition work in Dubai, shaping an approach to scale, site and audience engagement, and developing the spatial sensibility that continues to underpin her work.
Now based in Australia, Tinari’s practice focuses on the light and colour of Western Australian landscapes, inspirations captured through macro and aerial photography field research. Here, long-looking and quiet observation are integral to the work, with the experience of place holding equal weight to the studio process.
Tinari holds a Bachelor of Arts from Curtin University and undertook further visual arts studies at the University of London’s Central Saint Martins.
