Sandra Tinari is a contemporary artist working with chromatic fields that explore the subtleties of light, colour and materiality.
Her practice is grounded in a slow, meditative process of layering—where repetition, addition and reduction give rise to soft tonal shifts and atmospheric depth.
Drawing from the mineral landscapes of salt lakes and tidal zones, her work distils views into quiet, spatial fields—where colour unfolds gradually and perception slows. The works emphasising surface, material presence and the meditative act of making.
Developed through work across the UK, Europe and the Middle East, while living abroad Tinari’s practice reflects an ongoing exploration of light, material and perception.
While living in Italy, in Carrara and its artistic town of Pietrasanta, Tinari established a lasting engagement with materiality and form, while the atmospheric light experienced while later living in southern Portugal informed her sensitivity to colour, tone and spatial perception.
Her practice thereafter expanded into large-scale installation, public art and exhibition work in Dubai, shaping an approach to scale, site and engagement with the audience, while developing the spatial sensibility that continues to underpin her work.
Having recently returned to Australia, Tinari’s practice now focuses on the light and colour of landscapes in Western Australia, often captured in aerial view by the artist on field research trips for reference imagery. Here, the process of long-looking and quiet observation, of experiencing the outdoors and nature, is as important and impactful to the final outcome as her in studio painting.
Tinari holds a Bachelor of Arts from Curtin University and studied art at the University of London (Central Saint Martins).
